JAPAN & FRIENDS DAY

CLIENT

Japanese Society Gold Coast

BRIEF

The Japan & Friends Day Festival is an annual festival held on the Gold Coast to showcase the Japanese culture, complete with food, craft stalls, and entertainment. The theme for 2023 was 'tradition and future', with the client requesting that the poster feature elements from both the Gold Coast and Japan.

CREATIVE DIRECTION

An A3 poster and social media tiles were commissioned, with the overall direction fusing modern, flat illustrations with a twist of more traditional Japanese colours and patterns.

Taking cues from manga (Japanese comics), which use a panelled layout, illustrations of the festival's events were divided up across the page with a strong colour palette.

Prominence was placed on a bold typeface for those perhaps unfamiliar with the festival, while the Japanese character for festival 'matsuri', was also positioned so it stood out and was easily recognisable to those familiar with the language.
